My top 5 (okay, 6) brands to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight!

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight! This a great opportunity for us to understand how making more informed choices on the products we buy can have a huge impact on the lives of those less fortunate.

The FairTrade logo

The Fairtrade logo

Fairtrade is described by the Fairtrade Association of Australia & NZ (an arm of Fairtrade International) as:

Better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Fairtrade International have developed a strict global certification process to allow consumers greater confidence when buying everyday products that come from areas in the world where working conditions, rights, and pay can be unethical.

I have worked in India with Oxfam, and Vietnam with CARE Vietnam and I have seen first-hand how the cycle of poverty can grip communities when they are treated unfairly.  Why should we have the benefit of paying just $10 for a piece of clothing if it means a family can’t afford to eat? That doesn’t seem very fair does it?  To understand more about the principle of Fairtrade, check out this previous post.

For today, I’m going to share 5 super duper brands that are working hard to ensure their products are sustainable and ethical. This might mean that they are made using Fairtrade materials, made with sustainable textiles that have been sourced ethically and locally, or they have been able to go that one step further and have had the actual product produced certified under Fairtrade International if it has been made in a developing country (This will be evident by a little Fairtrade logo on the product packaging – and deserves a high 5 for sure!).

  1. Eternal Creation – certified by Fairtrade International. They have some super cute pieces for little ones!

    2. Green & Blacks Chocolate – certified by Fairtrade International (and is also organic!). It’s now deliciously available pretty much everywhere – so no excuses to reach for that other nasty stuff now!

3. Nerada Tea Organics Range – certified by Fairtrade International. My 2 favourites are the Green and Chamomile.  You can find this brand in most major and some independent supermarkets.

4. Pure Pod – Made in Australia using sustainable materials.  Considered a pioneer in ethical fashion in Australia.

5. Sinerji – a sustainable & ethical collection using natural dyes and organic cotton.

And I had better sneak one more in – we can’t forget the love of my life, sorella & me.  Our collection is made using certified Fairtrade cotton (and is also certified organic).  We use an Australian sewer but have been providing skills transfer and capacity building to a small family-run Fiji manufacturer for the past 18 months. We are so excited they are now ready to join the sorella & me team! By providing them an ongoing opportunity for work will ensure sustainable income and at the same time improve skills and employability – both of which are major concerns for most Fijians with its current poor economic conditions and regular natural disasters that destroy many businesses.

Love Peppermint!!!

We were thrilled the sorella & me sleepshirt was included in Peppermint magazine’s Fashion Safari feature for their beautiful Autumn edition!

Peppermint “is the green fashion and lifestyle magazine, celebrating eco and ethical style with a fun, fresh, intelligent and positive spin. It was created for the rapidly growing number of consumers who appreciate good design, fashion and creativity, but also care about social and environmental issues and where their clothing comes from.”

The perfect place for sorella & me, right?

Giraffe! Peppermint's Autumn safari shoot was at Werribee Zoo, Victoria

Giraffe! Peppermint’s Autumn safari shoot was at Werribee Zoo, Victoria

The location of the shoot was the beautiful grounds at Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria (which by the way is just 30 minutes from Melbourne and a great place to visit with the kids when you are in town!).

Just some of the labels in the shoot included stunning pieces from sosumeclothing and thisisbento. These labels work so hard towards sustainability and ethical production in all aspects of their collections – truly inspiring. I have had the pleasure of hearing Alex of sosumeclothing speak at various events and he is doing amazing things – so innovative with fabrics, dyes, and the way he produces his garments to reduce waste.

Pepperminy magazine

A big thanks to Stylist Leeyong Soo & the team at Peppermint for finding sorella & me and loving our sleepshirt as much as we do!

Love the look of Peppermint (we wouldn’t be surprised!)… Head over to the mags website for more ethical fashion love or look out for their beautiful magazine in your local newsagent. If they don’t have it – ask them to get it in! If you are an overseas sorella – don’t panic! Peppermint also ship internationally!

Beware of the fiery Dragon in her make-shift cyclone bunker. She will eat you up and spit you out if you don’t put that camera away.

WARNING: today is a rant-fest.

It’s no secret that we are paying too much for the same product a US or UK shopper can purchase it for.  Regardless of its country of origin, they can have the same item significantly cheaper than we can in Australia.  Some products I have come across are somehow miraculously 70% more expensive as soon as they land on our shores and into our shops.

And that, to me, stinks.

In case you weren’t aware, we offer the sorella & me women’s and maternity collection to anyone in the world for the same price an Australian pays for it.

Why? Because why should an international customer pay more than an Australian customer? They shouldn’t.

Why should they pay less than an Australian customer?  They shouldn’t.

Make no mistake, it’s the 2 major Australian department stores that have been the front runners for excessive mark ups for eons.  It blows me away that they have gone from thinking we are stupid, to less stupid but still not entitled to buy goods for their RRP i.e., REAL retail price.

Why can’t they step up to the world-wide-shopping-plate, be competitive and just stop ripping us off?

An example:

I was out shopping with my cousin and friend for frocks to wear to a wedding. (Yes, we got distracted and looked at shoes too, but we were otherwise quite well restrained and focused on dresses. Note, none of this information is important. Consider it a ‘fun-fact’). Continue reading

A G-string is like a landline telephone – no longer necessary

It’s exactly 7 days til my wedding – which is why I am taking the lazy sensible option and re-blogging one of our most popular posts from last year – and it’s timed well given it’s the big V day next week (fyi, no I’m not getting married on Valentines Day, we are the 15th! So no excuses for J1 not to give me flowers 2 days in a row!).

I think you will enjoy it – and I thank you for giving me the grace of re-posting while I madly dash out to sort out my fiance’s tie (because apparently I am marrying a man who doesn’t feel the pressure of an important deadline)….

According to a study in 2008, French women spend 20% of their income on lingerie.  Yes, you heard me, 20-bloody-percent. This is probably about the same amount that I spend on car, life, home and health insurance all rolled into one (and there’s nothing sexy about insurance).

I vow to take the 20% approach when I one day look like this:

No one likes a dud Christmas present.

4 years ago my friend woke up on Christmas morning to a glistening diamond and a proposal for marriage.  By wake up to – I literally mean poked and prodded at the crack of dawn to a handy-cam in her face and before she had time to wipe the sleep from her eyes, her besotted boyfriend was on one knee asking for her hand. (Asking if she wanted time to wake up first prior to asking her to be his wife probably would have been helpful, but he was excited, and bless him he just couldn’t wait).

She said yes, of course. What a happy Christmas…. But this poor guy is going to find it hard to top that gift for sure!

There are just 12 sleeps left until you and your loved ones wake up to a gift that will either provide swoon worthy attention at Christmas lunch from your jealous siblings, or cause you to hold back tears until the point (quite likely after too much festive cheer) you finally burst with disappointment about the Dustbuster he bought you. He thought it would make things easier for you. You think it stinks.

With that in mind, don’t be a bad-gift-giver this year. Don’t risk getting it wrong, because no one likes a dud Christmas present. That old saying It’s the thought that counts” is bullshit.

We have you covered with a number of gift guides from people who are in the know when it comes to gifts. No tricks here – we can happily endorse these people and their lists (because they have proven to consistently have their crap together throughout 2012, and have quite frankly, got me out of binds on various topics before).

Pour yourself and cheeky G&T and leisurely scroll these lists knowing you have a good chance of winning the best gift-giver competition this year.

For your mum, sister, bestie, and nana

First up, do a good deed by supporting Australian designers whilst also spoiling your love one.

Kids in the Kitchen: Chewy Cornflake Slice

There’s nothing new about this slice but it’s such a winner for busy Mums on the go! Plus, it’s a brilliant recipe for kids who love ‘helping’ in the kitchen. My daughter loves making this because apart from the chopping and chocolate melting, she can do most herself. Her favourite step in her words: “mixing the gooey and chewy part!”

As long as you have the flour, cornflakes and the condensed milk the rest you can substitute from your pantry with any dried fruit or nuts, coconut is great, dried apricots and even oats – whatever your kids love!  We usually to make a different version each time.

CHEWY CORNFLAKE SLICE

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups corn flakes

¼ cup organic sultanas

¼ cup sweetened dried cranberries

¼ cup plain flour

80g pistachios

1 can sweetened condensed milk

A row (or 2!) of Chocolate

METHOD:

 1. Preheat the oven to 180C.  Line a baking tray with baking paper.

2. Chop or Blend the dry ingredients to own desirable size, and combine in a bowl.

3. Add sweet condensed milk.  Mix until gooey and chewy goodness is combined!

4. Smooth mixture into prepared tray and bake 180 degrees 25 minutes

5. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water.  Set aside to cool slightly.

6. When slice cooled, add chocolate to the top in lined pattern using a fork and refrigerate to set.

7. Cut into squares to serve and fight your children for a piece!!!

Do you have a quick and easy never-fail recipe you make with your kids?
