Capturing the love of a mother with her newborn child

My husband bought LittleOne baby magazine for me when I was pregnant years ago.  I hadn’t seen the magazine before and knew straight away there was going to be something special inside the glossy pages! It has remained as one of my favorites.  I especially love the features they do on children’s bedrooms titled “Baby’s Space’.

The current issue of LittleOne baby is no exception and has a beautiful feature on new mums- real mums in the hospital just days after giving birth. Amy Doak mentions in her Publisher’s letter that there is nothing quite like “the look of love on a new mother’s face” (LittleOne baby Issue 10 p8). Photographer Kate Monotti has certainly captured this in the recent shoot. And we were thrilled to be able to supply and gift our sorella & me sleepwear to a gorgeous mum in the feature.

I remember a local photographer from the paper coming to my room after the birth of my babies with his camera wanting a picture, boy was I apprehensive! That experience for a little local paper was nothing on these brave and beautiful mums that have said yes to a magazine shoot so soon after birth.

Congratulations to LittleOne baby magazine on such a beautiful concept and we admire the beautiful women in the shoot that, regardless of the toll the previous days may have had on their bodies, are glowing with beauty and love!!

How did you feel after the birth of your baby? Would you have been brave enough to pose for a magazine?!!!

Get out of my way and let me run

There has been an increase in incidents around Melbourne recently of attacks on children and women. This, added to some truly horrific random incidences of violence against women in the past 12 months – which in some cases resulted in death – have really stirred up some anxiety in me this week.

I have only just recovered from an incident I was involved in while visiting my parents on the Sunshine Coast (Queensland).  A male approached me while I was running along the beach, exposed himself and chased after me. After working with the police I was informed he had done the same thing to a 12-year-old girl just days earlier.

12 years old.

As a result of this incident, and an attack on a female runner on my usual running path at home just a few weeks later, it has taken me over a year to begin to feel comfortable running or walking on my own again. Up until now I either ran on a treadmill at the gym, ran with my partner on weekends, or went for walks with friends.

Woman Running

But in the past month I had finally decided I wasn’t going to be dictated to in terms of when or where I would run (with some common sense exceptions I have always practiced being I never run nighttime and I avoid patches in my neighbourhood that are isolated).  I love running and I have run my whole life and it really drives me crazy that I am denied this right when and where I want just because I am female.

So with more news reports in the last 24 hours of an attack on a woman and a child in North Melbourne – I am having trouble figuring out how to feel about it.

I think mostly I am really angry.

I am really pissed off that women continue to be at risk of violence from men. For me, apart from running, it’s not being able to feel comfortable walking from a tram at night, going for a run at sunrise, or being able to stand on my own as so many of my male friends do in a taxi rank late at night.  I have the absolute right to do those things and it makes me really angry that it’s something I am consciously concerned about.

And it makes me so angry, that if I have children (if I am lucky enough) – that they simply won’t be enjoy the freedom that we did as kids.  That they can’t go riding around the neighbourhood on their bikes for hours on end.  They can’t go exploring.  They can’t enjoy the beach freely for risk of voyeurism (the Police told me the Sunshine Coast where I grew up is one of the highest areas for pedophilia in Australia).

This isn’t a new gripe at all I know, but it’s truly such a shame.  And even more so because there is perhaps nothing we can do about it.

Well, I’m going to stick to my running plan for now. And I hope that with each step brings new determination to keep on running, and keep on doing the things I want to.

Girl power and all that!

Moving forward following miscarriage

Today on the blog, a very courageous woman shares her deepest sadness.

We thank Alli from Alli & Genine for allowing us to share her story with the sorella-hood and also thank her for her being so brave in this mostly taboo subject of miscarriage.

We hope her experience provides comfort to those women in the sorella-hood community who have suffered a miscarriage and also provide a little insight for those of you who know a beautiful woman who has endured a similar loss.

We send positive energy to Alli, and to you all with the hope that by sharing her heart-felt words with you today, strength is found in moving forward, and as Alli herself expressed –

“I want other women out there to feel less alone in their journey”

…and that is what the sorella-hood (‘sister-hood’) is all about.

Where to from here? Alli ponders what was not meant to be….

Today I feel numb. Confused. Broken. Exhausted. Empty. Lost. And deeply heartbroken. Not sure what I should do next. Part of me wants to stay in bed and feel sorry for myself. To sulk, mope, cry, to attempt to sleep the day away. How I wish I could fast forward these long, sad days. Continue reading

Beware of the fiery Dragon in her make-shift cyclone bunker. She will eat you up and spit you out if you don’t put that camera away.

WARNING: today is a rant-fest.

It’s no secret that we are paying too much for the same product a US or UK shopper can purchase it for.  Regardless of its country of origin, they can have the same item significantly cheaper than we can in Australia.  Some products I have come across are somehow miraculously 70% more expensive as soon as they land on our shores and into our shops.

And that, to me, stinks.

In case you weren’t aware, we offer the sorella & me women’s and maternity collection to anyone in the world for the same price an Australian pays for it.

Why? Because why should an international customer pay more than an Australian customer? They shouldn’t.

Why should they pay less than an Australian customer?  They shouldn’t.

Make no mistake, it’s the 2 major Australian department stores that have been the front runners for excessive mark ups for eons.  It blows me away that they have gone from thinking we are stupid, to less stupid but still not entitled to buy goods for their RRP i.e., REAL retail price.

Why can’t they step up to the world-wide-shopping-plate, be competitive and just stop ripping us off?

An example:

I was out shopping with my cousin and friend for frocks to wear to a wedding. (Yes, we got distracted and looked at shoes too, but we were otherwise quite well restrained and focused on dresses. Note, none of this information is important. Consider it a ‘fun-fact’). Continue reading

Happy Valentines Day!

Rose Heart

Today on the blog I share my favourite William Shakespeare sonnet. This sonnet was chosen and used on my wedding day. Anna is getting married tomorrow (we are all a little bit excited!) – and on behalf of the sorella-hood we wish her and J1 well for the big day and much happiness for their future life together.

A G-string is like a landline telephone – no longer necessary

It’s exactly 7 days til my wedding – which is why I am taking the lazy sensible option and re-blogging one of our most popular posts from last year – and it’s timed well given it’s the big V day next week (fyi, no I’m not getting married on Valentines Day, we are the 15th! So no excuses for J1 not to give me flowers 2 days in a row!).

I think you will enjoy it – and I thank you for giving me the grace of re-posting while I madly dash out to sort out my fiance’s tie (because apparently I am marrying a man who doesn’t feel the pressure of an important deadline)….

According to a study in 2008, French women spend 20% of their income on lingerie.  Yes, you heard me, 20-bloody-percent. This is probably about the same amount that I spend on car, life, home and health insurance all rolled into one (and there’s nothing sexy about insurance).

I vow to take the 20% approach when I one day look like this:

“I cannot believe I still have to protest this shit”

Earlier this week we saw the US president inaugurated and get started on tackling another term.

And what we heard him say, among many things (war, security, blah blah blah), was the need to focus on a couple of key issues that (it would be fair to say) a large majority of people – US citizen or other – to this day have ignored.

Gay equality. Climate change. Equal pay for women.

The point that seemed to immediately cause ringing in my ears was was when Obama stated:

“For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts.”

But my immediate reaction was not of joy. I did not experience relief that The US President is asking the world to be fair, to give me a break, as a woman, with an equal right to any male for equal pay, opportunity and conditions.

My reaction was mostly disappointment.  Disappointment that it had to be said at all.

What did you miss in 2012?

Welcome back to the sorella-hood for 2013! We hope you had a wonderful time over Christmas with your family and set for another fantastic year!

As parents start to get the back-to-school preparations started, and men and women over the country groan their way back to work (dreaming of any sort of opportunity to be able to quit work and financially fund a permanent residence at the beach), Alisha & I are so excited to be reaching sorella & me‘s first birthday later this month, and can’t wait to see  where this year will take us (it’s going to be hard to top an amazing 2012!).

Aside from a overwhelming love of our sleepwear collection, a very surprising aspect of sorella & me last year was the growing love for this blog. We seemed to have naturally developed a little community of wonderful people to connect with via a couple of rambling posts each week.

If we can make you smile, raise some important questions, or perhaps help even answer some questions, then all the more important our time allocated for writing becomes.

So firstly – thanks so much for your support!

For today we thought you might like to know what our top 3 posts were for 2012 – this will give you a chance to read them again or perhaps discover them for the first time if you missed them the first time around!

In spot no. 3

“10 things to make you feel old, but also make you laugh”. I have now had another birthday since writing this post so it’s even more breathtakingly-dire!
