Capturing the love of a mother with her newborn child

My husband bought LittleOne baby magazine for me when I was pregnant years ago.  I hadn’t seen the magazine before and knew straight away there was going to be something special inside the glossy pages! It has remained as one of my favorites.  I especially love the features they do on children’s bedrooms titled “Baby’s Space’.

The current issue of LittleOne baby is no exception and has a beautiful feature on new mums- real mums in the hospital just days after giving birth. Amy Doak mentions in her Publisher’s letter that there is nothing quite like “the look of love on a new mother’s face” (LittleOne baby Issue 10 p8). Photographer Kate Monotti has certainly captured this in the recent shoot. And we were thrilled to be able to supply and gift our sorella & me sleepwear to a gorgeous mum in the feature.

I remember a local photographer from the paper coming to my room after the birth of my babies with his camera wanting a picture, boy was I apprehensive! That experience for a little local paper was nothing on these brave and beautiful mums that have said yes to a magazine shoot so soon after birth.

Congratulations to LittleOne baby magazine on such a beautiful concept and we admire the beautiful women in the shoot that, regardless of the toll the previous days may have had on their bodies, are glowing with beauty and love!!

How did you feel after the birth of your baby? Would you have been brave enough to pose for a magazine?!!!

dogy do-do or dogy don’t?

I am an animal lover. Usually when people say that out loud, others automatically assume they are NOT animal lovers and are trying to convince you otherwise. I must admit though I was frightened of dogs as a child.  Might have something to do with holding a tyre hubcap full of dog food and my grandfather letting two greyhounds off the leash, expecting me to put the food down.  Of course, in seeing them galloping towards me the food went in the air I screamed and ran away.  Not traumatized by this at all.

Anyway, I digress.  I am an animal lover.  On a recent attempt to get fit I began back at my local gym.  Just a little free trial because if my 3-year-old doesn’t like the crèche there is no point joining up.

My little boy sitting on the footpath in under the A-frame gym sign out the front of the gym wasn’t a good start.  Trying to coerce him out to come inside (this was day two by the way so he knew what was up and quite cheekily enjoyed crawling in to hide from me) wasn’t fun.  Thank-fully it only took a few minutes to get him out so I was pretty relieved – I was anticipating I could have been there acting all calm and ‘together’ on the street for a good while!

To dummy or not to dummy? When do WE say good-bye to the comforter?!

Early when I was in the ‘newborn haze’ I posted on Facebook “to dummy or not to dummy?”, to get advice from friends about whether I should give my baby one.  The response was mixed.  I decided to give him one. Would I give him a dummy again? Yes. My daughter didn’t have one (which is why I went searching for opinion), but the dummy was the only thing that gave me a break from breastfeeding my very thirsty son and allowing my body the time it needed to produce more milk.  It was a lifesaver in the car and he was a great sleeper with our strict rule that dummy was only for sleep time, so in the cot and in the car etc.   It was like magic – produce the dummy and off to sleep he would go.  However, I there surely isn’t a ‘one fix’ plan/approach to children, it definitely wasn’t something my daughter would have needed or benefited from.

A couple of years later and I have decided it is time for my little boy to say good-bye to the dummy. I would have gotten rid of it earlier, he is 3 soon, but I wanted to be totally available for whatever sleepless nights (I might have!) or time he might need with me in order to feel secure.  And so, over the Christmas break seems like a good time as the distraction and chaos of the festive season, and out of the normal home routine, might mean he will be tired and find it easier to go off to sleep without his dummy.

There’s no place like home…

Many parts of Australia are experiencing a heat wave over the coming days. But 40+ temperatures are the summer-norm for some and is just one of the many challenges living in outback Australia… Being a new first-time mother with limited support and resources is another, and today on the blog my good friend Peta shares her story (which never ceases to blow me away everytime I think about it!)…

I live in a small town.  No, not small like Toowoomba, Dubbo, or Bendigo, small like a place you’ve never heard of, on a road not many travel.

Just like ‘city mums’, my daughter and I enjoy walking. Only, our scenery is a little ‘different’ and our choice of routes are somewhat limited!

Eighty-ish people live in my town, and I know them all; by name, occupation and preferred drink.  When I had my first child they knew all about it too.  We called my partner’s father  the morning after my daughter was born, and by 7:45am all members of the community knew the weight, length and name of our little girl… with slight variations on the spelling. Daddy’s got the blues

This week is Post Natal Depression Awareness Week. With 1800 Australians being diagnosed every week, it’s no surprise that Australian organisation’s such as PANDA (Post and Ante Natal Depression Association) have dedicated a week-long campaign to raise awareness in the community of this debilitating condition.

But what I am taking from this week is something unexpected.

PANDA suggests that 1 in 7 women and 1 in 14 men are diagnosed with post-natal depression (PND) annually.

Yes I said 1 in 14 men.

In fact, it is suggested that this figure could be actually be a lot higher because while men have a similar predisposition for developing PND as women, they are less likely to come forward for diagnosis and support.

In basic terms, this means there could be many dad’s out there either not understanding what they are feeling, or if they do, they may feel ashamed or worry about being considered less masculine if they put their hand up for help.

Celebrating Baby’s 1st Birthday!

It’s Baby M’s 1st Birthday today!

The gorgeous cherub we were lucky to have in our photoshoot last year is Baby M. She was just 2 weeks old at the time and it was her first big outing with mum. We loved having her there for the afternoon – the whole atmosphere of the shoot changed as soon as she arrived. What was a mid-afternoon slump in energy after an action packed 6 hours of shooting, quickly changed pace with the arrival of Baby M still with her yummy new baby smell – there is nothing quite as special as a new baby!

Grace Kelly: 30 years since her tragic death

It’s 30 years this week since Grace Kelly tragically died in a car accident.  I blogged about my small but significant crush on her earlier this year, so I thought I would share it again today for those who may have missed it, along with this gorgeous pic I only recently found with her son Albert II. She was known to be an exceptionally dedicated mother.

Enjoy!

I adore Grace Kelly…

I don’t know how or when it started – I can’t remember the first time I saw her but I suspect it had something to do with driving our mother crazy and her needing some quiet time.  She probably plonked my sisters and I in front of Bill Collins’ Midday Movie and perhaps that particular day it happened to be the 1956 film High Society. It would very quickly become my all-time favorite movie, and Grace Kelly, my favourite ‘pretty lady from the movies’.

How to get back into exercise after pregnancy

Did you get into the fun of the Olympics? I have LOVED all the photos posted on social media this past month by friends of their children dressed up like their favourite athletes – some with goggles and their bathing suit, some with their BMX, some with their netball uniforms. So cute!

And I will admit to also getting caught up in the spirit of the games and feeling quite spurred on to get back into some more formal sport (although I do think my netball days are over – my engagement ring can barely fit over my broken knuckle)….

So my plan is to get back into a running program as well as yoga – 2 things I have always loved but have somehow got out of the groove of incorporating into my every-day.

Getting back into exercise reminded me of a great guest-post from February by Melissa Vandewater – Triathlete, Ironwoman, 2012 Olympic Trials competitor and all-round fabulous bird. She is an incredible athlete and an inspiration. Any time I catch up with her I drown myself in her tips for getting and staying motivated.

I know there are also some women in the sorella-hood that feel like they could also use a boost to get back into running since the birth of their baby. So I thought I’d re-blog her post on helping you get back into a routine, and you’ll be running like wonder woman (but in a more supportive bra) in no time!

A feeling in my loins…

As many of you know, I am currently at the very start of planning my wedding. I am completely overwhelmed, terrified, nauseated, and literally sleepless with all the options, costs and ways it could all go very very wrong. To make matters worse, while I am shortlisting venues and finalising budgets, I have had every bride there has even been tell me “Oh it’s all so fabulous! I wish I was planning my wedding day again! It’s the BEST!”

Which does nothing except make me feel like I am missing something. Didn’t anyone else feel the pain of wedding-planning-crazy-land?

Interestingly, as I grapple with the “is it all really worth it – why can’t I just elope” question, it seems one mother in the sorella-hood has also felt a similar confusion when it came to the experience of the birth of her first baby.

Does time heal old wounds? Here’s her story….
